"Enaiposha is a warm super-Earth with hazy skies lit by the rosy glow of a red dwarf. Three times bigger and 8 times more massive than Earth, the planet’s density means a chunk of it must be lighter than rock but heavier than gas. Very likely, Enaiposha is a water world."
Enaiposha means “awesomely huge body of water” in Maa, a language of East Africa. Water worlds have oceans on the surface, under it, or above it—an atmosphere of water in a liquidy-gas state due to high pressure. Most water worlds are super-Earths or sub-Neptunes.

Steamy Atmosphere
Even with water, Enaiposha is too toasty to be habitable. Like Venus, it’s shrouded in a steamy atmosphere packed with large molecules—possibly water vapor or methane. Thick, bright clouds block or reflect most of the light from Orkaria (“red ochre”), its star.

Follow the Water
Seekers of extraterrestrials have a motto: Follow the water. That’s because all known life, from bacteria to humans, is made of cells. Water can dissolve more substances than other liquids and carry them in and out of cell membranes—a crucial life function.

Earth’s Big Sisters
TOI-1452b, a warm super-Earth in the habitable zone, could be 30% water by mass. Tiny, rocky Earth is just 1% water. So instead of searching for Earth’s twin, should we focus our life-seeking lenses on Earth’s big sisters? Super-Earths are common in other systems.

Trivia[]
Hypothetical image of GJ 1214 b (Enaiposha).
Enaiposha is an exoplanet that orbits the star GJ 1214, and was discovered in December 2009. It is the most likely known candidate for being an ocean planet.
