The Galactic Bulge is the 30th Interstellar Object and the 4th Milky Way Galaxy obtained in The Beyond Bubble Universe, which can generate Stardust. (Unlocked at Rank 25)

In-Game Description[]

"The central bulge is a sphere containing the galactic bar. Most stars are in the disk, but the bulge is so dense with them that their planets could never experience night. With density comes chaos, and these mostly old stars zip around in unpredictable orbits."

Traits[]

Common[]

  • Galactic Jets (Speed):

"Like neutron stars, galaxies emit high-energy polar jets. The speed and intensity of the jets indicate how active the nucleus is—in short, how much matter is fueling the core. The Milky Way no longer has an AGN (active galactic nucleus)."

  • Fermi Bubbles (Payout):

"Discovered in 2010, two giant bubbles above and below the bulge dwarf the galactic disk. These fogs of high-energy particles burst out of the core 2.6 million years ago. What galactic force caused them? Analysis is ongoing, as simulation models disagree."

Rare[]

  • Milky Way (Payout):

"The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy that's rotating while speeding through space, like a hurricane crossing a dark ocean. A dense nucleus is embedded in a thin disk of gas and stars, all of which is encased in a massive sphere, or halo, of sparse stars."

Epic[]

  • Cosmology (Speed):

"The scientific study of the universe asks the very biggest questions. How did it form? What came before? How does it work? Is it infinite? Will it die? All the pieces we observe—comets, moons, planets, stars, galaxies, nebulae, and even voids—provide some answers."

  • Dark Matter (Payout):

"Dark matter acts like a superhero. It’s everywhere in space and yet invisible. Its gravity distorts huge objects that we can see. It can even buttress a dwarf galaxy against annihilation by a giant one. The duo of dark matter and dark energy make up 95% of the universe."

  • Dark Energy (Discount):

"Little is known about dark energy, except that it’s repulsive. Opposing gravity, this strange force causes matter to scatter rather than attract, pushing our universe to expand faster and faster. Dark energy makes up 68% of the universe’s mass-energy density."

Constellations[]

  • Eridanus (1.5x Speed):

"Eridanus, The River, is the longest constellation in the sky. It starts near Rigel and twists and turns all the way to its brightest star, Achernar ("River's End" in Arabic). It was named after Eridu, an early Sumerian city in the marshes of what is now southern Iraq."

  • Hercules (2x Speed):

"The Roman warrior-god who defeated the Nemean lion (Leo), the Crab (Cancer), and Hydra, too, has a broad, squarish chest made of four stars, called the Keystone. Mighty Hercules is kneeling over Draco, the dragon he slew."

Achievements[]

Achievement Galactic Bulge
  • Runaway Stars (Rank 3):

"A supernova, a thwack from the galaxy’s bow shock, or a gravitational slingshot by a black hole… These extreme forces eject stars from the bulge, the halo, and even the galaxy. Runaways become galactic rogues, interstellar migrants, or emigrants to another galaxy."

  • Dark Rift (Rank 6):

"From Earth, the Dark Rift flows through the Milky Way like a murky river, slicing the galaxy in half. This band of interstellar dust masks the blazing stars of the Sagittarius Arm behind it. It’s best viewed on a clear, moonless night in August, far from cities."
