Mesozoic Valley

The Mesozoic Valley is the third of the main simulations, featuring the evolutionary history of prehistoric creatures throughout the Mesozoic Era. It primarily includes various species of dinosaur, but also some non-dinosaur prehistoric creatures. It explores the evolution of dinosaurs from archosaurs, through their extinction in the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction Event, and into their eventual evolution into modern birds. The games main mascot, Archie the Archosaur, originated in this simulation.

Game Mechanics

The Mesozoic Valley begins with a single dinosaur node, with more species unlocking as you advance in Extinctions. Clicking the screen will generate Fossil Fossils at the rate of one per click, but they can be gained at a faster rate by clicking the arrow button on top of each dinosaur node in the tree to 'charge' the node. Tapping the dinosaur itself allows you to purchase more copies of the dinosaur, which increases the payout from each charge.

Dinosaurs will not automatically generate fossils without tapping until you unlock the corresponding Trait Cards. These traits automate production of Fossils for each dinosaur, removing the need to tap on the arrow button and increasing the productivity of each dinosaur. Trait Cards are improved and upgraded using Mutagen Mutagen, a currency gained by purchasing a certain number of dinosaurs, but must first be unlocked by collecting the cards from Geodes.

At the top of the screen are quests, which give the player goals like «Collect 25 Stegosaurus», «Upgrade 3 Traits», and «Photograph Archosaur». Three quests are displayed at a time, and with each rank more quests are required to be completed to advance to the next level. Once a quest is completed, the player will receive a Stone Geode containing Mutagen and Trait Cards.

Extinction

After completing enough quests for each rank of the Mesozoic Valley, you have the option to trigger an Extinction Event. When this happens, an asteroid falls from the sky, wiping out the dinosaurs and restarting the simulation. This allows the player to unlock new dinosaurs. It will also give you a Silver Geode, and increase the Simulation Level by 1. Each rank of the Mesozoic Valley increases the speed of the Primary Simulation by 1 + (rank / 100), (which can be increased by Reality Engine upgrades) so rank 1 gives a 1.01x multiplier, rank 2 gives 1.02x, up to rank 50 giving 1.5x. Reaching certain ranks also unlock new generators in the Primary Simulation.

Prestige

At rank 50, the «Asteroid» button changes to a «Prestige» button.

"You have unlocked enough ranks to prestige! When you prestige it will reset your progress back to rank 1. You will keep all your rare and epic trait cards. You also gain one additional level to the Warm Climate prestige trait."

The Warm Climate trait provides a 50% bonus to payout from all dinosaurs per level. Also additionally to rare and epic Traits, you also keep Mutagen, but common Trait cards are set to zero. The multiplier for the Primary Simulation is retained and even increased just like from a rank increase. All the reptile generators also remain unlocked.

The maximum number of prestiges is 10. It is generally advisable to stockpile as much Mutagen as possible along the way, so that you can advance your dinosaurs as far as possible.

Traits

Traits are cards that can upgrade dinosaurs at the cost of Mutagen Mutagen. When you open Geodes, you can gain a mix of Mutagen, Darwinium, and Traits. You can also watch «Mystery Trait» ads to gain cards for a single random trait. As of now, the maximum level for a card upgrade is 20.

	Jurassic Age	The Jurassic (201.3 MYA—145 MYA) was the second period of the Mesozoic Era. During this period, dinosaurs became the dominant species on Earth as the supercontinent Gondawana began to split, replacing the deserts of the Triassic with lush rainforests.	Rank 15
	Carnivore	Animals that feed entirely on meat, or the flesh of other animals, are called carnivores. About half of dinosaurs were carnivores. With teeth specially designed for ripping and tearing, some carnivores were hunters, while others were scavengers.	Rank 17
	Parallel Evolution	Pteranodons, which were not dinosaurs, developed the ability to fly during the Triassic. Later, independently, some dinosaurs adapted the ability to fly as well. This is an example of parallel evolution, where two unrelated creatures develop the same trait.	Rank 27

Upgrade Requirements

Upgrade requirements are the same for all trait rarities, common, rare and epic. They scale with an average of around 2x per level, with a few larger deviations. Upgrading a trait to the max level of 20 would cost 44,588 cards and 3,066,060 Mutagen.

Trivia

• Several "dinosaurs" are actually not dinosaurs as they don't belong to the clade Dinosauria.
  • Dinosaurs are archosaurs, but the "Archosaur" is not a dinosaur, it appears to be either an early or basal archosaur or a member of the clade Pseudosuchia. It could also be an Archosaurus, but Archosaurus is not an archosaur.
  • Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs, which is why they are an offshoot of the Archosaur node separate from the mainstream dinosaurs. Pterosaurs are related to dinosaurs, as both belong to the clade Ornithodira.
  • Despite their origins in different clades, the Mosasaurus, Plesiosaurs and Ichthyosaurs are all grouped together as the only aquatic prehistoric creatures on the tree. This is in spite of the fact they are distinctly not Archosaurs but different lineages of reptile, Mosasaurus being Squamates, Plesiosaurs being turtle relatives and Ichthyosaurs belonging to an unknown lineage of Diapsid.
  • The Cynodont is also not a type of dinosaur. Dinosaurs and other Archosaurs (such as the above-listed creatures) are Diapsids whilst Cynodonts are Therapsids. These non-dinosaur creatures are included in the Mesozoic Valley to show the diversity of species during the era, as an example of the other organisms alive at the time. Mammals belong to the clade Cynodontia, but the Cynodont in the game is Thrinaxodon, not a mammal.
• The Mesozoic portal in the Main Simulation is in the ocean habitat, but if the Lungs upgrade is bought it turns into the habitat that looks similar to the habitat behind the Archosauria trophy.
• The tree does not accurately reflect dinosaur phylogeny, as Archaeopteryx is actually closest to Velociraptor, with both being paravians, unlike Gallimimus. And Eoraptor is closest to sauropods, as it is a sauropodomorph, not a theropod. And paravians and Gallimimus are maniraptoriforms, unlike Compsognathus.

Coolmath Games

Mesozoic Valley is also available as a stand-alone game Cell To Singularity: Mesozoic Valley, which is available on Coolmath Games. In this version, the Mesozoic Valley is the only simulation, available at the very beginning. As such, extant reptiles and birds are not unlocked by reaching certain ranks in Mesozoic Valley.
